Personal Narrative - My Parents Funeral :: Personal Narrative Writing

Narrative- My Parents' Funeral Celery sticks served as slugger bats; olives substituted for baseballs to be smashed across the kitchen. Cousins Sonny and Guido were pitcher and catcher, and my sister Dorrie was a combination of infield and outfield. I came up to bat for the first time just as Gramps called for us to come into the living room. A policeman stood in the doorway. Nonnie and Aunt Sandy were crying. All morning we had been told to stop touching the Thanksgiving dinner or we would be punished. Who expected to go to jail because of olives! Gramps pulled Dorrie and me onto his lap and hugged us close. "Your momma and daddy were going to get Uncle Vince and a truck hit their car. God took them to heaven." He started to cry. I wished he would let us down. His prickly sweater smelled of tobacco, and his mouth was purple from wine. Dorrie and I went home with Aunt Sandy. My stomach was hurting and making tiger noises, but everybody was crying so I was afraid to say I was hungry. In the morning we went to a dark room where Mother and Daddy were lying in coffins. It smelled so sweet in that room, and the red-glassed candles burning everywhere made it sticky hot. Mother wore a lacy pink dress. A pink satin blanket covered her feet. Daddy looked so white, as if he wore makeup like Mother. Folded newspapers were hidden inside his trouser legs. At night we all knelt down on the blue carpet and prayed a long, long time with Father Minnorra from Our Lady of the Angels Church. My knees were sore and I shifted my weight from one leg to the other. Aunt Sandy touched my shoulder and said, "Marie, stop that rocking. Kneel up." The morning of the funeral was very bright. The curtains were opened in the coffin room. Aunt Sandy held my hand. She wore a black hat with a big black feather. Her eyes had big red circles around them, and her mouth was bright red. She reminded me of the clown in my circus coloring book.

Sami Akabawy Spring 2012 Assignment #1 (Chap. 1,2 &3) Hadil Kamel 900-04-0195 Chapter 1: * Why would Carl Williams ask a non-technical manager to assume the CIO position? * For a CIO to be successful, especially at times when IT presents a problem area, he or she has to have more than just solid IT background. The CIO needs to have good management skills; they need to be a fixer.Jim Barton has the required management skills, he is considered as a great manager at IVK; he also had a lot of ideas regarding how IT should be run, and he used to critic Davies, the former CIO, on how to do his job. Therefore, he was a good candidate for this position because the company actually needed a good manager not a good technical. * If you were Jim Barton, would you take the job? * Yes, I would take the job. It is definitely a great challenge for someone with no IT background to become the CIO; however, a good manager should be able to run the business without having the deep knowledge of the matter.I would get the required background through research and learning. * What do the IVK Corporation exhibits tell you about the current state of the company? Given this information, what does IVK need from a new management team under CEO Carl Williams? * IVK statements show that the company has grown recently; however, it was not well planned and that is showing in the huge increase in the operating expenses. This growth was not done efficiently which lead to the decrease in net income despite the increase in total service revenue. The new management team should focus on making proper planning as well as new strategies that focus on managing the operations and resources efficiently and effectively in order to decrease the operating expense and increase the net income. Chapter 2: * How do you interpret the kid’s advice, â€Å"You’ve got to know what you don’t know†? * I think what the phrase means is that in order to become a good leader, you have to know your capabilities and your deficiencies and to be honest with yourself, especially when embarking on a new job you have to position yourself correctly and to give good impression to your employees.You have to know what is it that you lack and either try to learn about it or search for ways that your team could cover for the capabilities that you lack. The kid mainly meant that you can’t over-estimate yourself and like some managers do assume that you know everything about the matter, but rather admit your lack of knowledge in some areas and work on it. * How do you think Davies got fired? How likely it is that Barton will be fired within the year? * I think Davies didn’t have a strong connection with the CEO and his business peers, which lead to a communication problem between the management team and the IT department.I think he may also lack the business skills and competencies. * I think as a successful manager, Barton will be able to handle his job well. With his good managerial capabilities he will be able to develop good collaboration between the technologists and the management team; as well as enhancing and maintaining relationships with other business leaders. * What kind of questions should Barton be asking of CIOs, analysts, investors, customers and other IT movers and shakers? How should he prioritize and organize these meetings? For the CIOs: His questions should be focusing on the nature of the job, the key roles of CIO and the depth of technical knowledge required. * For the analysts: His questions should be on the IT impact on a company’s development. * For the investors and customers: His questions should be about their views on the service the company provides and how to improve it. * I think he should first meet with the CIOs to be able to understand his role and responsibilities, then with the analysts, then the investors and custome rs. Chapter 3: Do you think IT management is different from management of other functions? * Yes I think IT management differs from other functions because in It technology moves fast, and you can’t keep up with the fast growing technology that everyday something new is coming up and you always have to be up to dated. Although IT managers were experts in their fields and knew the details about it, new technology comes along and the technical workers are the one who know the details about it and become experts in it to a level that their managers can’t reach.On the other hand, in other functions, the manager can do the job of anyone in his department as well as any of his employees. * What did Barton learn from his trip to the bookstore and late night of studying? * After his trip to the bookstore and late night of studying, Barton realized he can’t get to know in depth everything; it is too much to grasp. * What depth of IT understanding must a CIO leader have t o be effective? * The CIO must have enough IT understanding that would give a general background on the matter to be able to assign who knows and does what in his team. Alzheimers Disease is an increase in cell loss causing shrinking of the brain (Living with Alzheimers, 2006). There are no known cures at this time. Alzheimers Disease can have a massive impact on both the people that are diagnosed with it, the caregivers, and their families. Many people get confused in the association of dementia and Alzheimers Disease. Dementia is like a symptom and is not considered a disease although it can be diagnosed. Not everyone with dementia has Alzheimers Disease (Radford, J., 2018). Alzheimers is a medical diagnosis and can be split into three stages. The early stage is when the person still is mentally intact. They perform all their normal daily routines but are starting to experience some memory loss. They may forget names or words. Have trouble remembering names or places. They could be having trouble performing simple tasks. Feeling forgetful and misplacing things is normal at this stage (Alzheimers Association, 2018). The next stage is the middle stage. In this stage the progression is more apparent. The person might start forgetting their own personal history. Having more frequent outbursts or mood swings. They could have trouble recalling information. Other things with the body might start happening as well, like incont inence and changes in their sleep patterns (Alzheimers Association, 2018). The late stage is the last stage. By now significant changes are happening to cognition and personality. The person still speaks, but not remember the conversation or might not make sense. At this point they probably need daily assistance. They are confused on place or surroundings. They will become more and more confused and disoriented (Alzheimers Association, 2018). I would think that the beginning stages when I would still feel like me but have trouble focusing on life or forgetting simple things that I would not normally forget would be frustrating. The worst part, other than the initial discovery of a loved one having Alzheimers, would be the unknown. When my grandmother was diagnosed this was always my fear. I never knew each time that I would visit if that would be the last normal conversation with her. With Alzheimers, the person can change so rapidly. Those who have had a loved one get diagnosed with the disease may become depressed, angry, and scared as well (Living with Alzheimers, 2006). Another factor might be that the person recently diagnosed may have been the original caregiver to another person. This would put extra stress on the family. Now that family has two people to find or give care to. This would be both an emotional and financial obstacle. Catching the disease at the beginning stages is the most beneficial to the individual and family (Living with Alzheimers, 2006). The disease is found more in Africa compared to the United States, but African Americans are diagnosed more here than those not of color. In a roundabout way that may mean that there is something happening in the United States that is different than what is happening in Africa. It is thought that a persons genes contribute to the disease (Boyd Bee, 2015, p.431). Scientists are trying to find a link between Alzheimers Disease and people with lower education. It is possible that people who do not use their mind a lot are more at risk (Alzheimer Europe, 2015). Alzheimers Disease is cruel and relentless. Those who suffer from this disease are literally lost in their own minds. There are ways to cope. Keeping a daily journal of events to keep track and remind ones self of things that have happened. Also, it is beneficial for the family and caregiver to go through old memories with the person to try to keep them thinking about their past. Telling the stories might help them hold on to them longer. Staying active in their daily activities promotes thinking and personal well-being. Exercise of the body and also cognitive exercise is helpful. Games that promote thinking keeps the brain sharp (Living with Alzheimers, 2006).
